Christianity has strict regulations when it comes to sex. According to the bible sex is an act of procreating between a married man and women. The definition does not stray from that and it is not flexible. Any other type of sex is deemed a sin. Sexuality can be related to gender or how someone identifies themself, for example homosexual or heterosexual. Sex is more than just an act, it can be ones desire, behavior, or identity. It also provides a system of power, rules for living, and regulates our behavior. Recently there have been attempts to broaden Christianity to accept homosexuals but the movement is still slow. Osteoporosis, literally meaningporous bone, is a disease of the skeleton in which the amount of calciumpresent slowly decreases to the point where the bones become extremely brittleand subject to fractures. The skeleton serves two functions. It providesstructural support for organs and muscles and also serves as a depository forthe bodys calcium and other minerals, manly phosphorous and magnesium. Thebone holds 99% of the bodys calcium. The other 1-% of remaining calcium isfreed to ci rculate in the blood and is essential for crucial functions in thebody such as blood clotting, muscle, contractions and nerve functions. Boneshave two main sections. The outer section of the bone is the cortical bone. Itis composed of a hard shell that serves to protect the other section of thebone, called the trabecular bone. This part of the bone is an inner lacy,structural matrix of calcium that helps support the bone structure. Bone tissueis constantly being broken down and reformed to help the body cope with everydaystress and for maintaining a properly functioning body. The breakdown of thebones is called resorption and is performed by cells known as osteoclasts thatdid holes into the bone allowing calcium to be released into the body. Then,cells produced by the bone called osteoblasts help rebuild the bone. Theosteoblasts first fill in these holes left by the osteoclasts with collagen andthen by laying down crystals of calcium and phosphorous. A complex mix ofhormones and che mical factors controls this osteoclast-osteoblast balance. Thetrabecular and cortical parts of the bone both give off calcium to the body whenit is needed, but as aging progresses the amount slowly declines. After the age of 35,the body becomes slower and slower in replenishing bone as time goes on. Osteoporosis develops when bone resorption occurs too quickly or if formationoccurs too slowly. Because weakened bones, an increased susceptibility tofractures of the hip characterize osteoporosis, spine, and wrist are prevalent. Doctors have identified two types of osteoporosis that correlate with specifictypes of fractures. Type I osteoporosis, often referred to, as post enopausalosteoporosis, is most associated with wrist and spine fractures. Type IIosteoporosis, also called senile osteoporosis, is generally attributed toreduced calcium by old age and causes mainly hip fractures. There are more than300,000 hip fractures, 300,000 wrist fractures, and over 700,000 spinalfractures in the US each year (Peck and Avioli 19). Osteoporosis causes morethan 1.5 million fractures each year and the cost to the healthcare system forthese fractures is over 13.8 billion dollars per year, greater than the cost forcongestive heart failure and asthma. Of the individuals who fractured a hip,one-half will be permanently disabled, 20% will require long-term nursing care,and 20% of hip fracture victims die within a year, usually from complicationscaused by surgery. Sex Education What is the first thing you think about when you think of elementary school rites of passage? For me it is and always will be sex education. Only for me it was not such a time of wonder; it was more like a time of trying to keep my stomach from turning inside out. I remember it like it was yesterday, even though it was more like seven years ago. It was late April, headed into the summer of my fifth grade year. My teacher was Mr. Atkinson, a funny little man with a good background in American history and, conveniently, a fifth-grade sense of humor. Our class was located in a small portable, which was the trademark of overcrowded public schools in the area. Without air conditioning in the spring it was like a furnace in there, and that did nothing to help my situation. District policy in regards to sex education led to this learning phenomenon each spring, when the male teachers would take aside the fifth grade boys and the female teachers would do the same with the girls. I remember being rounded up like cattle and herded into the portable, which was doubly crowded as it bore the brunt of the fifth grade male population in the school. There was excitement, fear, wonder, apprehension, and a hundred other emotions swirling around the group of kids, and all of them were obvious to anyone watching. As we entered the small building, a mass of fidgety kids pinching through a small doorway in the corner of the room, it was like no other time I had been in there. The room seemed different somehow. Not worse, anyway, but there was a definite change between then and the last time I had been in there. Thinking back on it now, it was most likely the energy of all that curiosity, because when the speech began, a depth of knowledge previously unknown to us was suddenly and wonderfully available. After we had all found chairs, those who had not sitting on the floor, the room quieted down and we all knew something was about to happen.
